The voice over IP service delivered over the Hampshire Public Services Network is now up and running, enabling over 230 Hampshire County Council and partner organisation sites to make telephone calls to other enabled sites over the network with no call charges.

The launch of the VoIP service is the final stage in the implementation of HPSN, and means that we now have the largest private VoIP network in Europe - the second largest in the world - and it is still growing as more sites join every month.

There are currently over 1,000 sites connected to HPSN, including the schools internet service, the People's Network internet service, District Council networks and NHS Direct.

The service has been built on leading-edge technology, and we in Hampshire are more advanced in its implementation than most private sector companies.

All but one District or Borough council in Hampshire are also connected, meaning that calls can be made and transferred across organisations, greatly improving our ability to provide a joined-up service to our customers.
